Abstract  In recent years, GIS has been extensively and intensively used in the fields of humanities and social sciences such as history, linguistics, economics and criminology. Family tree, which contains a large number of historical, geographical, cultural and other aspects of information, is one of the important elements of Chinese history. However, the value of family tree is not adequately used and studies on family tree are still at initial stage. The fundamental reasons for these problems are: 1) family tree resources are widely distributed and hard to share; 2) research methods and means are single. Therefore, it demands full cooperation from all parties and making use of advanced technology to construct the Chinese Family Tree Database and Platform to protect and use family tree. Firstly, this paper illuminates the history of family tree development and analyzes Chinese family tree resources. It points out that spatial-temporal information is the essence of family tree information and digitization, spatialization, standardization and networking is the development trend of family tree. Then, it discusses the key issues of family tree resources integration such as consistently spatial-temporal datum and framework, data model, information sharing, system interoperability and data collecting mode. Finally, it gives four important principles to guide family tree resources integration and designs a platform called ZHJP based on SOA. The platform integrates not only websites but also stand-alone systems of family tree. Different systems interchange and share information through a standard format. The platform consists of three layers in implementation: data layer, service layer and application layer. It is community-based, open and multi-level that everyone could access websites in different levels and web services. In this paper, a series of new ideas, methods and techniques to the research of family tree have been brought forward. It facilitates mining and resolving relevant problems in humanities and social sciences, and further promotes the development of society, economy, politics and culture of China.
